Closure of St Dunstan’s

The churchwardens have been closely monitoring the rapid rise in the number of people catching Covid-19 in our local area – perhaps due to the new variant that we are told is much easier to pass on.

We have been in discussion with the local clergy to explore the consequences of closing and options for providing pastoral support by other means. We have been in discussion with many parishioners, and whilst there is an obvious desire to keep St Dunstan’s open, most have told us they feel the situation is now such that they will not attend services, even if they are available. Another major factor that emerged is St Mary’s have decided to close, and we think people will find it both confusing and contradictory if 2 churches serving the same population arrive at different conclusions about remaining open.

So, even though the law permits services to carry on in the present lockdown, we feel the situation is such that we have no alternative but to close St Dunstan’s. The situation is being closely monitored, with a view to reopening St Dunstan’s as soon as it is considered safe to do so.
